Open concept kitchen is a part of an open floor plan that is intended to reduce or remove unnecessary dividers in a home. The goal of this floor plan is to create an airy atmosphere inside the house. With no divider dividing kitchen with the rest of the house, an illusion of space can be created in the house, even if the house is actually not very large. Open floor plan also increases the mingling frequency of family members. With all parts of the house open, they can spend their time together not only when they are dining or watching TV, but also when they are cooking or doing any other household activities.
Open floor plan is interesting particularly when applied to kitchen. Traditionally, a kitchen, together with bathroom, is the most secluded part of a home. While applying open floor plan to bathroom is still difficult to do due to privacy factor, applying this plan to kitchen is considered realizable. Today, we can see houses with kitchen that is open toward living room, dining room and family room. The divider between kitchen and those parts of a house can be either removed or reduced. When reduced, half wall instead of full wall can be used as the divider.
Open Concept Kitchen Living Room
A major breakthrough in the implementation of open floor plan is the opening of kitchen to living room. The outcome is surprising because both parts of the house now not only exchange their functions, but also often share them. Guests, especially among neighbors, will love to join in kitchen activities instead of staying boringly in the living room and any activities that are done in the kitchen can now be done in the living room.
Open Concept Kitchen Dining Room
A kitchen is all about preparing food. Once the food is prepared, it will go to the dining room where the whole family is awaiting it. With open floor plan applied to kitchen and dining room, it is possible for both spaces to share their furnishings. A large kitchen island counter can be used to unify the kitchen and the dining room as it is large enough to function as both kitchen counter and dining table.
Open Concept Kitchen Family Room
It has been common to put a kitchen island counter a few feet behind family room’s couch without a divider between them. This configuration allows kitchen and family room to be unified in a harmonious way. While mom is in her kitchen, she never actually detaches herself from the family gathering that takes place in the family room. She can still participate in family activities that take place in the family room while preparing foods in the kitchen.
Open Concept Kitchen with Half Wall
An open floor plan doesn’t necessarily abandon the use of a divider. Instead of removing it completely, it is possible to reduce its size. A half wall or a knee wall can be used to divide the different spaces while maintaining the open atmosphere of the house. This divider is often needed because of privacy reason, because mom often wants to define her own realm, because the wall can be used as decoration, and because the enclosing wall can effectively contain messes and prevent them from leaving the kitchen.
